The Priest House Hotel, Castle Donington: 21.3% on LPG and oil
A historic hotel in beautiful surroundings near East Midlands Airport, running on LPG and oil rather than mains gas, with excellent dining and holiday accommodation on site.
The challenge
As a historic building in a rural area, the hotel heats with a combination of LPG and oil rather than mains gas, at a cost in the region of £40,000 a year. The operators wanted lower costs and a smaller footprint without extensive investment in new equipment.
What we did
In July 2024 the system was fitted across the three plant rooms: a 60kW boiler serving hot water, a 100kW boiler and its back-up serving the hotel heating, and a 100kW boiler serving the holiday housing. The installation took 2.5 hours in total, with a guarantee that the installation cost would not exceed the year-one saving, and no disruption to hotel or restaurant operations.
The result
Excluding the roughly 1,700 litres of fuel used for cooking each month, fuel use per degree day per guest fell 21.3% between August 2024 and May 2025: 10,380 litres saved, worth £5,242 in that period. On the strength of the result, the client has asked us to assess the other buildings on their estate.
How this was measured: the client provides monthly fuel usage, adjusted for degree days and occupancy. Each month is compared with the same month of the previous year to give litres of fuel per degree day per guest. Adjusted like-for-like, fuel use fell from 48,617 litres to 38,237 litres.
The V1 system is the OH4 Energy Saving System, so client quotes and the full case-study documents refer to it as OH4.
