Magnetic water conditioning: five questions every sceptical engineer should ask
Search for magnetic water conditioning and you will find two camps: suppliers making confident claims, and engineers rolling their eyes at them. We sell this technology, and we think the eye-rolling engineers are asking the right question, just at the wrong target. The mechanism debate is interesting; the meter data is decisive. Here are the five questions we would ask any supplier, including us.
1. Where is the meter data?
Not the lab study, not the testimonial, not the physics diagram. Before-and-after consumption from a real building's own meters, with the baseline stated. If a supplier cannot produce this, everything else is decoration. Our flagship answer is a 27% verified reduction at Belvedere Lodge care home, measured from the home's own meters.
2. Was the comparison fair?
A mild winter cuts any heating bill. So does a quieter building. A fair comparison is like-for-like: weather-adjusted where the data allows, aware of occupancy changes, and made in kWh rather than pounds, because tariffs move and a "saving" in money can hide a rise in consumption. Ask how the baseline was constructed. A supplier who can't answer crisply hasn't really measured anything.
3. What else changed at the same time?
New boiler controls, a BMS tweak, a burner service, a refurbished wing: all of these move consumption, and all of them love to sneak into someone's savings claim. The clean answer is to change one thing and hold the rest steady during the measurement window, then keep an installation log so the attribution is defensible. Insist on it.
4. What is the downside risk?
This is where non-invasive measures earn their place in the queue. The V1 system wraps around the pipework: nothing inserted, nothing connected, no downtime, and your plant and maintenance regime carry on as before. If the meters show nothing, you have lost little and learned a lot. Compare that with invasive measures, where the cost of being wrong includes drained systems and downtime. Ask every supplier: what exactly happens if this doesn't work?
5. Will you stake the sale on a monitored pilot?
The single most revealing question. A supplier confident in their technology will happily run one site, agree the measurement method in writing before installation, and share the data as it arrives. One who prefers you to buy the estate first is telling you where their confidence really sits. We structure projects around single-site pilots for exactly this reason; it is how a sceptical care home group became a six-home rollout.

We will not pretend the mechanism debate is settled, and we would rather not win it on a whiteboard anyway. We would rather win it at your meter.
